My ex broke off my engagment years ago and he got a lawyer involved and had to the return the ring. They didn't consider it mine until we married. I believe that law has changed in PA, not sure about other states.

Kept It!!
I kept it, and made it into a pair of earrings along with the diamond from my mothers engagement ring, she had it reset as a pendant and had given it to me for a birthday one year and was almost exact same size so they made perfect earrings
