It may sound strange, but a new survey says that a majority of Australians are in favor of including "To be faithful including no flirtatious following or friending" in their vows at the altar.
According to a press release obtained by HuffPost Weddings, Australian life insurance company InsuranceLine surveyed 1,200 Australians and asked them to choose the 10 "most relevant" vows from a list that included both traditional and modern vows.
While traditional vows like "sickness and health," "better or worse" and "richer or poorer" ranked in the top four choices for both men and women, more obscure vows also crept into the mix.
1. "Til Death Do Us Part"
One of the most traditional marriage vows, "til death do us part," did make the top ten for both men and women, but it took a back seat to other vows -- coming in tenth place for women and eighth place for men. Just a little more than half -- 66 percent -- of people said they would include "til death" in their vows.
2. Financial Support
Whether or not to
join your bank accounts when you marry is a big decision, but 45 percent of those surveyed said that spouses should commit to financially supporting their partner if one becomes unable to work.
3. Online Flirting And Friending
Many couples favored including "to be faithful including no flirtatious following or friending” in their vows, ranking ninth among women and tenth for men. Just over 70 percent of women and more than 60 percent of men said they support including this digital faithfulness vow.
4. "Submit" And "Obey"
Just 14 percent of women and 21 percent of men would vow to "submit" to their spouse, and only 18 percent of women and 27 percent of men would vow to "obey."
5. Equal Parenting
Men and women want to share parenting responsibilities. "To share child rearing equally" ranked eighth among women and ninth among men.
6. Keeping Up Appearances
Twenty-three percent of respondents said spouses should be committed to keeping up their looks while married.
